Record Attendance of 2100 Marks 2007 Symposium.
2 Days. 484 Scholars. 190 presentations.
Scholarship, collaboration, and diverse intellectual interests underscored the highest participation levels ever. 484 students shared research and work from the year on subjects that spanned illegal immigration, college values, and bird migration research, to a performance of Asian cultural traditions, forensic fingerprinting demonstrations, and a hands-on brain exhibit. Every academic department took part, along with several programs, student organizations, theater groups, and music ensembles.

Two new traditions highlighted the 2007 Symposium:

April 9, Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, 8 p.m.
Danielle Allen, University of Chicago Professor and Dean of Humanities, opened the symposium with the Ruth Winter Community Lecture entitled "On Democracy and Knowledge." The lecture, which is part of the Sesquicentennial Lecture Series, followed the opening of the student art exhibit at Durand Art Institute.

April 10, Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, 4:30 p.m.
The Red & Black Closing Ceremony featured some of the best student work of the year. Four student scholars -- chosen by a committee of faculty, students, and staff -- presented on topics that ranged from the sciences, education, history, and foreign language.

Sessions occured in venues across campus, including the Donnelley and Lee Library, Mohr Student Center and Stuart Commons, Hotchkiss Hall, Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, Durand Art Institute.

About the Student Symposium
2007 marks Lake Forest College’s sesquicentennial celebration and the 10th anniversary of the Student Symposium. The Lake Forest College Student Symposium provides students with an opportunity to share their scholarly research and creative projects to the College community through presentations, exhibits, debates, performances, demonstrations, and posters. The day is a testament to our diverse achievements inside and outside the classroom. Regular classes are cancelled on the day of the Symposium so faculty, staff, and students can participate in the events. Lake Forest College also welcomes the general public to attend the symposium and support this celebration of student scholarship and intellectual engagement. Since its initiation in 1998, this event has been among the high points of the academic year.
This year onwards the Student Symposium has been renamed in memory of the late prof. Steven Galovich past Dean of Faculty/Provost. To learn more click here.
